Kate Torgerson is the newest attorney with Watts Law group, joining in June, 2016, relocating to Shallotte from the Raleigh area. She graduated and passed the bar in 2009 and started working for a national Social Security Disability practice. In a very short time, she became known to Judges throughout the Carolinas as a skillful and thorough representative for claimant's rights in disability hearings. After representation of nearly 200 disability claimants in Tennessee, Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, Kate needed a change of pace (and a break from the constant travel)!

She began working for a firm in Durham doing a varied civil practice. She worked heavily in the areas of real estate, landlord and tenant issues, estate planning, small business, social security disability, family law, and automobile accidents. After being exposed to a wide variety of practice areas, Kate was drawn to estate planning and decided it was time to try her hand at a solo practice. With a background in disability, she knew that securing people's future needs was her greatest passion. She loved visiting clients in their homes, discussing important issues to keep North Carolina families protected.

Kate attended law school in Lansing, Michigan at what was then the largest private law school in the country, but is now Western Michigan University Thomas M. Cooley Law School. During her time there, she was an active and influential student, serving on multiple boards such as Law Journal, Moot Court, and Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity, where she served as President of the local Chapter. She was awarded Best Advocate in her win during the First Year Moot Court Competition as well. Additionally, she was chosen by faculty to serve on a three judge Honor Council which, in conjunction with a Dean and faculty member, resolved ethics complaints against students and faculty. Her favorite activity was tutoring Constitutional law for two years at the Student Bar Association.

In her spare time, Kate enjoys kayaking, the beach, cooking, singing (she used to be a Vocal Performance Major, but these days it's mostly karaoke), acting, yoga, pistol shooting, going to every outdoor concert she can find, volunteering at church, making jewelry, and hanging out with her little sisters. She loves football and is a die-hard Ohio State Buckeyes and Pittsburgh Steelers fan!

In Raleigh, she was involved with Project Willpower, a pro bono initiative with Legal Aid of North Carolina to provide free estate planning services to low income individuals. Another one of her favorite volunteer activities was Roller Derby! She will miss going to bouts in Raleigh with the Carolina RollerGirls, but she's looking forward to finding a new team here on the coast.
